How to Order
Flexibility

All European rail journeys have some flexibility, however this tends to be directly related to the ticket price.

Flexible tickets give more options for refunds or ticket exchanges should you decide not to travel. Non-flexible tickets booked in advance are a good way to keep costs down.

Open tickets are available on some routes.

Classes

Most trains across Europe offer Standard and First Class travel. Although their names may differ eg, Premium and Economy.

Some services offer a further 'Business' class.

The services offered in each class differ between train operators. Generally First class is more spacious and includes a meal.

On overnight (or sleeper) trains class's vary please contact us for further details.

Standard Class

Standard class tickets attract the lowest fares and are the most common for of travel on European trains. All trains offer this type of travel, the further in advance you book your ticket the cheaper it will be.

If you wish to upgrade to first class on the day this can usually be accomodated just speak to the train manager and pay the difference.

The comfort levels in standard class will meet most travellers requirements. Except on high speed trains there is very little difference in seating except a little more leg room in first class

High speed trains are the most comfortable across all ticket ranges and include spacious seat in air conditioned carriages. There will be a bar or buffet for food and drink.

The level of comfort on ovenight trains depends on the chosen sleeping accomodation. The lowest fares are for 6 berth couchettes, this will be shared with other passengers. You can if you wish book out the entire compartment for a supplement for extra privacy.

Reclining seats are comfier than standard seats on overnight trains but for a good rest flat bed accomodation is a must.

A 4 berth couchette is 'First Class' it is slightly more expensive than a 6 berth but does offer extra space.

First Class

First class seat are wider and have more legroom than standard class. The carriages are quieter and more spacious as there are less passengers.

On high speed trains such as Eurostar and Thalys first class also includes a meal served at your seat. There may also be further perks depending on the train such as free broadband or newspapers.

First class fares tend to be around 50% more expensive than standard class fares.

Rail travel in Portugal, Spain, Italy and Eastern Europe tends to be relatively cheap so first class travel on these routes represents exceptional value for money.

Business Class

Business class travel is a specific service available on Eurostar and TGV domestic. Business class offers specific benefits including:

  • Flexible tickets
  • Faster check-in
  • Access to exclusive business lounges
  • Dedicated carriages for business travellers
  • Spacious, comfortable seats
  • At-seat power points
  • Complimentary three-course meal and drinks served at the seat
Open Tickets

An open ticket allows travel on your chosen route within one month of the ticket start date. It does not guarantee a seat on a train.

Some trains require seat reservations, check at the local station before departure.

Connections

Some journeys may require a change of trains or 'connection'.

Most connections depart from the same station at a different platform with a short period to wait between trains. However on some occasions a connection may be from a station in the same city. A short taxi ride or bus may be required, we will advise on booking if this will be the case.

Remember, Eurostar journeys require check in at least 30 minutes before the train departs so bear this in mind when making a connection.

If you journey requires a connection each leg can be booked separately, you can choose how much time you wish to spend at each destination on route.
